| Touring the "History
on the Hill"
By Candice Lynn Buchanan
A cemetery with no tombstones…a banished cow…a school that graduated the first degreed woman in all of Pennsylvania…a place called Eden…a famous artist…a Greene County born Governor…a Rain Day Boy…a segregated graveyard…a leader in female education….and so many more that I won’t yet give away - all strung together, all being very Greene County “connected” if you will, for your entertainment and education this summer. A “History on the Hill” tour
beginning at the fountain at the center of College Park in Waynesburg will
be held regularly on Friday nights this summer. This guided walking tour
will take visitors through the unique history of the parks, the early years
of Waynesburg College and most notably
the people of Green
Mount Cemetery.
Focusing on individual stories of Greene County lives, the tour will make stops throughout these three sites and incorporate related Waynesburg and Greene County history into the highlighted topics. Local history heroes, as well as our everyday ancestors, will be the focus of this event, with their individual stories being told. Tours are set to occur every Friday from June 2 - September 1, 2006, at 7:00 p.m., weather permitting. The tour will last about an hour and a half and costs just $5.00 per adult, children 12 and under tour for free. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the historic Green Mount Cemetery and the downtown revitalization program Waynesburg Prosperous & Beautiful. Those who arrive early for the tour will find live entertainment taking place around the fountain between 6:30 and 7:00. If you cannot make it to a Friday night tour, other tour times can be scheduled for no additional cost. Group rates are also available upon request. To schedule a tour, inquire about group rates or for any other information you can call Candice at 724-627-8841, ext. 7 or send an email to candicelynnb@yahoo.com.
