BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF JOSEPHINE DENNY

Josephine Denny was born 31 August 1893 in Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania. She was the second of three daughters born to Eleazer Luse Denny and his wife, Louise Inghram. Josephine was the last surviving member of her maternal and paternal families, both of which settled in Greene County prior to 1790. She resided virtually all of her life in the family residence at 145 West High Street in Waynesburg. Though her two sisters, Mary and Helen, were married, neither had children; later in life both returned to the family residence to spend the remainder of their lives in the company of Josephine.

Josephine and her sisters, Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver and Helen (Denny) Howard, were graduates and great supporters of Waynesburg College. Denny Hall, a women's dormitory on campus, was named in their honor. The devotion to the college exhibited by the Denny sisters was in keeping with family tradition. Their great-grandfather, John T. Hook, served as a founding trustee of the college, and their grandfather Meeker Woodruff Denny, as well as Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver, subsequently served as trustees.

Miss Denny was 99 years old at the time of her unexpected death and was looking forward to her 100th birthday. A lady who had lived through both world wars, "All my boyfriends are buried in France," was the simple and telling reason she gave for never marrying. In an interview concerning the work of the Greene County Historical Society, conducted when Josephine was 85 years old, she said, "I can't even think about my own home, there's so much to do here. It'd be a disgrace for me to die." Miss Denny led a very full life that will allow her family line, which ended with her, to live on in memory and spirit.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Josephine Denny Collection photographs were passed from Eleazer Luse Denny [1865-1910] and his wife, Louise Inghram [1867-1956], to their daughters, Mary Inghram (Denny) Weaver [1891-1972], Josephine Denny [1893-1992] and Helen (Denny) Howard [1896-1981]. Josephine Denny passed the photographs to Farley Toothman who owned and shared the photographs with the Greene Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Photo Archives Project in 2004.

The photographs in this collection were initially arranged by family; however, additional photos continue to be added to the end of the collection as they are shared for scanning. For best results, use the DENN Collection Index to look for specific individuals or subjects.
