"Killed By Falling Upon A Pitchfork.

D. Mack Goodwin, Merchant At Durbin, PA., Meets With Fatal Accident.

His Body Penetrated by a Fork Handle, Yet He Survived Twenty-four Hours.

A very sad accident occurred at Durbin, this county, on Friday evening last. D. Mack Goodwin, the well known merchant of that place, was assisting in storing a load of hay in his barn. He was standing upon the loaded wagon inserting a hay fork for lifting the hay, when he stepped backward and fell. A pitch-fork was stuck into the ground and leaned against the load of hay. As he fell the fork-handle penetrated the back part of his body about eight inches injuring the intestines and bladder. Dr. McGlumphy, of Rock Lick, was summoned, and by his advice the patient was at once taken to the Hospital at Wheeling. He endured the trip satisfactorily, arriving there about five o'clock Saturday morning. His injuries were found to be such, however, that recovery was impossible, but he survived until four o'clock Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Goodwin was a son of Daniel Goodwin and had been in business at Durbin for eight years. He had been postmaster and telephone operator there, also. He was a member of the Baptist church and was an upright, respected citizen. A wife and four children are left to mourn his demise.

The funeral was held from his home at 10 a. m. on Tuesday, interment in the Lazear burial ground. A funeral sermon will be preached at the Baptist church at Ryerson's Station on the first Sabbath in September."
