14 April 1898, page 1, column 5. (Transcribed by Candice Buchanan.) "The death of Mrs. Delilah McCosh occurred Tuesday morning at the residence of her grandson, J. F. Bristor, 275 North Franklin street. General debility was the cause of her death, she being 87 years of age on March 14. Though in feeble health for some years owing to advanced age, she was not confined to bed until the first of January and since then, though there were improvements at times, her condition had been grow [sic] weaker until death came. Mrs. McCosh was born March 14, 1811, on Ruff's Creek, Greene county, the daughter of Jacob Hixenbaugh. When only 16 years of age she was united in marriage with Robert Bristor, a school teacher and surveyor, and they settled in Richhill township in northwestern Greene county, then a comparative forest. The land was cleared and it was her husband who laid out the historic town of Jacksonville and who also owned a great deal of land in that vicinity from which until her death she obtained a dower. To them were born nine children, two of whom died in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. Wm. Hunt, Jefferson avenue; W. S. Bristor, Fairmont, W. Va., and Mrs. Lawrence Hughes, of Crothers. A deceased son, J. H. Bristor, was a major in the Union army and state treasurer of West Virginia in 1868-70. Her first husband died in 1852 and four years later she married Benjamin McCosh who died in 1871. For a woman of her years her mind was remarkably clear, almost to the hour of her death, and she was able to tell many interesting circumstances of her early life recollecting distinctly about droves of deer that would sometimes pass over her father's farm and later that these animals were frequently seen at her home in Richhill township. She was a member of the Christian church for many years. Brief services were held at her grandson's Tuesday evening and Wednesday the remains were taken to her old home at Wind Ridge, Greene county, where the funeral services will take place at 9 o'clock Thursday morning and the interment will be made there.--Washington Reporter." |
