"City Engineer Geo. D. Jenkins Taken By Death First Superintendent of State Highways in Greene County, Widely Known in Tri-State Area, Dies At Home Here. Funeral Rites Sunday George D. Jenkins, aged 68 years, well known local civil engineer, died at his home, 440 Bowlby street, Friday morning, December 25, 1936, at 7:30 o'clock following a brief illness. Mr. Jenkins was born in Cumberland, Md., August 28, 1868, a son of George W. and Victoria Harrison Jenkins, deceased. Upon the death of his mother when he was only two years old his father removed to the old Jenkins homestead at Centerville, Washington County, where his boyhood was spent. He later attended California State Normal School and completed a course in civil engineering at Ohio Northern University. He later took up the practice of his profession at Monongahela and served there as city engineer for a number of years. He came to Waynesburg in 1900 after having been elected borough engineer and under his direction the first permanent street improvement in the borough was undertaken and completed. He served as borough engineer for a number of years and in 1912 was appointed county superintendent of highways, which position he held until 1925 when he resigned to resume the practice of his profession. For a number of years prior to his death, in addition to his private practice, he served as borough engineer for Waynesburg. Mr. Jenkins was a charter member of the Elks Lodge of Waynesburg and was active in all its affairs from the date of its foundation until the date of his death. He was also affiliated with the Waynesburg Lodge No. 153, Free and Accepted Masons, and was a member of the New Castle Consistory. As a young man Mr. Jenkins joined the Episcopalian Church of Monongahela and maintained the affiliation until his death. He was united in marriage with Irene Ray, daughter of the late Judge J. W. Ray, of Waynesburg, in 1912, and is survived by his wife and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest A. Deems, of Monongahela, and Mrs. C. S. B. Ward, of Pittsburgh. Funeral services will be held from the home, 440 Bowlby street, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. George S. Maxwell, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be in Green Mount Cemetery. All members of the Waynesburg Lodge of Masons are requested to be in the lodge rooms Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock to attend the services. Masonic rites will be conducted at the grave." |
