"Mrs. Sarah Jones Elms, one of Waynesburg's aged and highly esteemed women, died at her home, on East Franklin street, Thursday, June 16, after an illness of eight weeks. Mrs. Elms, who was the widow of George Elms, deceased, was born in Tomath, England, March 12, 1833. After her marriage she and her husband resided in Birmingham, for a time, but in 1854 came to America and settled near Swart's, this county. Their eldest son, J. H. Elms, was born in England. The husband served in the Union army during the civil war. Mrs. Elms was a devoted member of the Episcopal church and was known for her kindness of heart, being respected by all her friends and neighbors. Eight children are surviving: J. H. and G. H. Elms, of Waynesburg; J. Hufty Elms, of Denver; William A., of Fordyce; Sarah A., Lizzie M. Elms and Mrs. S. O. VanCleve, of Waynesburg, and Mrs. John Harkins, of Ravenna, O. Beside these there are 28 grand-children and 10 great-grandchildren surviving. The funeral was held on Sabbath, at 10 a. m., services being conducted by Rev. L. F. Cole, of Pittsburgh, the Episcopal burying service being used. Interment in Green Mount cemetery." |
