"Ex-Deputy Sheriff H. S. Kent Meets Death By Accident

Killed by a Saw Log Rolling Over Him.

A Popular Young Man.

A sad accident occurred near Oak Forest, this county, on last Wednesday by which ex-Deputy Sheriff Hicey S. Kent lost his life.

On Wednesday forenoon he and Jesse Anderson, a tenant on his farm, were in a woods near White's church cutting saw-logs. They had cut down a tree and had saved a log thirty feet long and twenty inches in diameter, almost off. Mr. Kent decided to go below the log and cut off a limb. The ground was steep, but he thought as one end of the log rested against a stump it would not roll. When he cut away the branch the log broke loose where it was partially sawed off and started to roll, tearing out the stump before it. Mr. Kent saw his danger and attempted to run, but tripped and fell on some brush piled in the way. He fell upon his back with his feet toward the log and it was quickly upon him. Owing to the stub of the limb raising the log from the ground, his body was not injured, but his face was badly crushed. He arose in a few minutes and remarked to his companion that he not believe he was much hurt, but after taking a few steps sank down again. As soon as possible help was secured and he was taken home, Drs. Milliken and Blair, of Waynesburg, and Dr. Grimes, of Oak Forest, being summoned. They found his upper jaw crushed, nearly all of the teeth being broken out, but his skull was not injured. Probably some arteries of the face were severed, as the loss of blood was very great, his death being caused, we understand, from this. He retained consciousness until a few minutes before he died, which occurred a little before midnight.

Mr. Kent was 36 years of age and had served as deputy sheriff under his father, Mordecai Kent, deceased. He was genial in disposition and had a large number of friends. About two years since he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Reese, daughter of John Reese, of Reese's Station. His wife and a little son, aged about six weeks are left to mourn his demise. The young husband had but recently erected a fine new home. Two brothers, Harry, of Oak Forest, and W. T., of Point Marion, and an aged mother survive him. He was a brother-in-law of County Surveyor T. B. Dinsmore, of this place. The funeral was held on Friday, being largely attended. The services were conducted by Revs. J. E. Darby and A. P. Cobb, of this place. Interment at Rosemont cemetery."
