Description / Citation: Carte-de-Visite
photograph. Original, professional photograph from Photographic Artists,
J. Gurney & Son, 707 Broadway, N. Y. Handwritten inscription on back
of photo reads “Loffingwell” but this may be something other than an identification.
An online history of the photographer posted at www.daguerreotype.com/gr_table.htm
may help date the photo: "From 1857 to 1869 his gallery was listed at 707
Broadway, New York City. In 1857, he was noted in partnership with John
Bishop Hall, making and distributing Hallotypes. This partnership was not
listed in the New York City directories. From 1858 to 1860, he was listed
as photographic artist, 349 Broadway. Sometime in the late 1850's he may
have employed Samuel J. Miller, a former daguerreian in Akron, Ohio, as
a 'poser.' This was the assistant who posed the sitter for the camera.
In 1860-1861, he was listed as a photographist at 707 Broadway, in business
as J. Gurney and Son, with Benjamin Gurney. In 1874, the Gurney and Son
partnership was dissolved. Benjamin Gurney continued to work at Kurtz's
old gallery at 872 Broadway.") This photograph is in an album that was
donated by Glenn Jacob Roy Thornton Toothman, Jr., to the Greene County
Historical Society (918 Rolling Meadows Road, P.O. Box 127; Waynesburg,
Pennsylvania 15370). The Toothman-Hoult Series probably began with Martha
Jane (Hoult) Toothman [1850-1931], wife of Thornton Jacob Toothman [1847-1896],
and daughter of John Cunningham Hoult & Susanna Bare. Martha’s photographs
likely passed to her daughter, Margaret Lee (Toothman) Wilson [1882-1970]
and her husband, Fred Martin Wilson [1877-1967], who never had children
and consequently passed the photographs to Margaret’s grandnephew Glenn
Jacob Roy Thornton Toothman, Jr. [1920-2001] and his wife, Katherine Jane
(Throckmorton) Toothman who owned and shared the photographs with the Greene
Connections: Greene County, Pennsylvania Photo Archives Project in 2005.
Each generation added to the collection with photographs from their own
family and in-laws. The Toothman-Hoult Series is a part of the Katherine
Jane (Throckmorton) Toothman Collection.
