Mary Vanata obituary, The Messenger, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania,
29 July 1845, page 3, column 4. (Transcribed by Candice Buchanan.)

"Died on the 26th, inst., at her residence in Richhill township, Greene county, of Phthisic Pulmonalis, Mrs. Mary Vanata, wife of Samuel Vanata, Esq., in the 54th year of her age.

The deceased has left behind a large family and an affectionate husband to mourn her loss. She was truly an exemplary mother, a kind and tender companion, and an obliging neighbor - ever ready to administer to the wants of her fellow beings. She suffered long without murmuring, resting her faith with her Redeemer, and exhorting those around her to prepare for the solemn change that awaited them. Near the close of her sufferings she exclaimed:

Jesus can make a dying bed
Feel soft as downy pillows are,
While on his breast I lean my head,
And breathe my life out sweetly there."
