"John Hunter VanCleve, a well known and highly esteemed citizen, died at his home, three miles west of Waynesburg, Friday morning, Mar. 8, 1907. He was a son of Obediah VanCleve, deceased, being born Oct. 25, 1824, and had witnessed much of the advancement in Greene county, which has taken place during the past three quarters of a century. Deceased was a man of strong character and unwavering principles in every cause which he deemed to be right. His integrity, his uprightness of life and his devout Christian spirit were examples to all around him. His aged wife, and the following children survive: William, of Columbus, O., Mrs. Jesse McNeely, of Rutan; Samuel, of Waynesburg; Joseph who resides on the home farm; Mrs. Catharine Jack, of Harrisville, W. Va., and James H., of Washington, Pa. One son, John, recently died at Nineveh, Pa., and their first child, Adaline, died in her youth. The funeral was held from his late home on Saturday at 1 p. m., services being conducted by Rev. C. J. Feitt, of Jefferson, and Rev. Mattison, pastor of the Throckmorton M. E. church." |
