David Daniel Watson died intestate. Eliza (Garrett) Watson, David's widow, renounced her right to be the administrator of David's estate and asked that Letters of Administration be issued instead to James Smith Watson, David's eldest son by his first marriage. James, only ten years younger than his step-mother, took over the management of the estate, assisted by Robert Watson, his uncle, and Tim Ross, another local man.
