"Mrs. James M. House Mrs. Mary Owen House, widow of James M. House, and one of the well known women of Waynesburg, died at her home on East Greene street, Friday morning, December 10, aged 81 years. She had been confined to her home for the past two years with rheumatism and recently complications developed which caused death. Mrs. House was a daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Reese Owen, deceased, and was born in Waynesburg, September 2,1847. She was graduated from Waynesburg college in the class of 1867 and had the distinction of being the oldest living graduate of the college. Later she studied music at Musicville, Conn., and after her graduation there she taught in the school for a time. She returned to Waynesburg where she taught music for a number of years. She was united in marriage with J. M. House, whose death occurred twenty-two years ago. Mrs. House was always interested in the affairs of the community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Women's club and W. C. T. U. Three sisters survive, Mrs. Amelia Sharp, of Washington; Mrs. John Purman, of Homestead, and Mrs. W. H. Willis, of Philadelphia. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. James E. Wilson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. J.G. Lauderbaugh, pastor of the First Baptist church. Interment in Green Mount cemetery." |
