"Mrs. Joseph G. Ritchie

Mrs. Philanda A. Ritchie, widow of Joseph G. Ritchie, deceased, formerly of Waynesburg, died at the Columbia hospital, Wilkinsburg, September 30, aged 72 years. She had been in failing health for several months and had recently returned from Atlantic City where she had spent some time for the benefit of her health. Mrs. Ritchie was a daughter of William and Mary Andrew, deceased, and was born at Ontario, Ohio, April18, 1847. On February 10, 1876, she was united in marriage with Joseph G. Ritchie, promoter and builder of the Waynesburg and Washington railroad, and the first president of the company. Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie resided in Waynesburg until they removed to Chicago in 1889. Mr. Ritchie's death occurred twenty-eight years ago. Mrs. Ritchie had resided with her daughter, Mrs. Harry Armstrong, of Washington, Pa., for several years, and they had recently removed to Pittsburg[h]. She was a life-long member of the Presbyterian church and was always active in church work. She was most highly esteemed. Beside her daughter, Mrs. Armstrong, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Denny, of Angola, Ind. The remains were taken to the home of Dr. A. E. Thompson, Washington, Pa., where funeral services were held Wednesday evening at 7:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. W. J. Hogue. On Thursday at 3 p. m., short funeral services were held in the First Presbyterian church, Waynesburg, conducted by the Rev. R. M. Patterson. Interment in Green Mount cemetery."
