"Word was received here yesterday by Mrs. J. O. Hughes, of South Washington street, of the death of her aunt, Mrs. Mattie Wells Adams, of Washington, D. C. Her death occured [sic] Sunday morning, October 27, 1935, following a short illness. She was 87 years of age.

Mrs. Adams, widow of Robert Adams, Civil War veteran, was born in Waynesburg, the daughter of Col. J. H. and Ellen Walker Wells. Her father was a member of the Greene County bar and one-time editor of the Waynesburg Republican. She is the last of a family of six children. Most of her life was spent in Waynesburg, but in recent years she had lived in Washington, D. C., where she was active in church and philanthropic work. She resided with her nephew, Coulter Wells, Washington attorney. Surviving her are five nephews and two nieces. They are Coulter and John Wells, Washington, D. C.; Earl and Charles Wells, Cincinnati, Ohio; J. P. Donley, St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. Martha McKone, Paris, France, and Mrs. J. O. Hughes, of Waynesburg.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon in Washington. Interment will be in Arlington Cemetery."

"Mattie Wells Adams '71, of Washington, D. C., died October 27, following a short illness. Mrs. Adams was born in Waynesburg in 1848. She was graduated from Waynesburg College in 1871, and later was united in marriage with Robert Adams, now deceased. Mrs. Adams had lived in Washington, D. C. in recent years where she was active in church and philanthropic work."
