Obituary #1 "Miss Mary W. Denny, Well Known Resident, Dies Was Active in Church and Community Affairs. Miss Mary Woodruff Denny died at her home on North Richhill street, Saturday afternoon, April 24. She had been ill of heart trouble for some time, but only for two weeks had she been confined to her room. Miss Denny was one of Waynesburg's most highly respected women. She was a daughter of Meeker W. and Jane Luse Denny, and was born April 8, 1858, having spent almost her entire life in Waynesburg. Her grandparents were among the early settlers of Greene County. For a few years she lived with her parents near Jefferson and there she attended Monongahela College. With the removal of the family to Waynesburg, Miss Denny entered Waynesburg College and was graduated in the class of 1880. She was the last living member of her class. She had long been a member of the First Presbyterian church and took an active interest in all church work, having been the first woman elected a trustee of the church. Miss Denny was greatly interested in all civic work in the community. She was a member of the Children's Aid Society of Greene county and in past years frequently attended the board meetings of the Children's Aid Society of Western Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh. When the Mother's Assistance Board was organized in Greene county Miss Denny was appointed by the governor of Pennsylvania to the local board and served most efficiently as treasurer of the board for fifteen years. She was a member of the executive board of the Greene County Chapter American Red Cross during the World War and supervised the packing of hospital garments. She was a former president of the Federation of Greene County Women and also of the Tuesday Reading Club. Miss Denny is survived by one sister, Mrs. J. W. Phelan, of Waynesburg; and four nieces, Mrs. George B. Drake and Miss Josephine Denny, of Waynesburg; Mrs. Mary Denny Weaver and Mrs. Helen Denny Howard, of Chicago. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. George S. Maxwell, assisted by Rev. G. Clements Edson, Dr. Paul R. Stewart and Rev. Arthur Smalley, of Washington. Interment was made in Green Mount cemetery." Obituary #2 "Mary Woodruff Denny '80, of Waynesburg, died at her home Saturday, April 24, 1937, of heart trouble. In the securing of alumni data, Miss Denny was perhaps the most dependable of all those who are helping President Stewart in the preparation of the college history." |
