SOURCE: Emma Ragan Pipes obituary, Waynesburg College Bulletin, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, April 1943, page 5, column 1.

"Mrs. Emma Ragan Pipes '82 was taken from us Wednesday morning, April 7, 1943. Mrs. Pipes was one of our oldest living alumni. She was born February 28, 1860 at Rogersville. She was a daughter of Z. C. and Anna M. Hill Ragan. She graduated in the class of 1882 and was its only surviving member. After graduating from Waynesburg College she taught for three years at Enfield College in Illinois. Returning to Waynesburg she did a great deal of teaching in this region, and many of her fond friends refer to her as their music teacher. She was united in marriage with W. S. Pipes and to the union was born Ragan Pipes, who became a lieutenant during World War I and died in France. Mrs. Pipes was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was active in social groups of the region, especially the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ladies of the G. A. R. and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. The Waynesburg College community mourns her especially because she was one of our most faithful, devoted, and interested alumni. For years she was the oldest alumni present at the banquets and traditionally made the motion that the graduating class be admitted to the Alumni Association. The President of the College has appreciated beyond measure her absolute faithfulness to the Waynesburg College cause. Never strong physically and never possessed of a large part of this world's goods, nevertheless she gave constantly of her strength, her money, and her prayers to her alma mater. The President of the College remembers no financial campaign, however large or small, into which she did not put at least a small sum. When the present campaign of bonds and war savings stamps for the college was initiated, she was one of the first to put her offering upon the altar of this institution, and being the only living member of her class, the Class of 1882 stands out among the perfect classes in competition during this campaign. She rests in Green Mount Cemetery overlooking the college she loved."
