"Dr. J. W. McKay Died At Grove City

A Former Minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and President of Waynesburg College.

Dr. J. W. McKay, a former minister in the Cumberland Presbyterian church, now united with the Presbyterian church, and former president of Waynesburg College, died in the Grove City hospital, Saturday morning, December 18, of heart trouble.

Dr. McKay had been in failing health for more than a year, but was taken seriously ill several weeks ago while visiting relatives at Grove City and was removed to the Grove City hospital where he remained until his death. He was born at Jackson Center, Mercer county, Pa., Aug. 11, 1857, and was a son of John and Jane Hill McKay, deceased, his family being of prominent pioneer stock. He attended Waynesburg College and graduated in the class of 1883, and was also graduated from the Cumberland Theological Seminary at Lebanon, Tenn.

His first pastorate was at Franklin, Ky. He later was pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Carmichaels. With Dr. Philip Axtell, deceased, he organized the Shady Avenue C. P. church at Pittsburg[h] and also reorganized the now Central Presbyterian church at Washington, Pa.

In 1900 he was acting president of Waynesburg College, and in 1918 he was elected president of the college and served three years.

He is survived by his wife and two sons and one daughter, Rex L. McKay, of Waynesburg, Lynn McKay, of Mercer county, and Miss Marie McKay, of Waynesburg. He also leaves one brother, John McKay, of Sharon, Pa., and three sisters, Miss Jane McKay and Mrs. Sarah McBride, of Fredonia, Pa., and Mrs. Simon Moon, of Erie, Pa. Memorial services were held at the home of T. C. McKay, of Grove City, on Monday at one o'clock p. m., conducted by Rev. David Lang, pastor of the Shady Avenue Presbyterian church of Pittsburg[h], assisted by Rev. Kenneth Hays, of Pulaski, Pa., Rev. George Bowden, of Slippery Rock, Pa., and Rev. Williamson, of Grove City. Interment in Grove City cemetery."
