"Waynesburg Young Lady Killed In Porto Rico.

Miss Jean Ankrom, Supt. of Ponce Schools, Met Death In Carriage Accident On Tuesday.

Daughter of A. I. Ankrom and Graduate of Waynesburg College -- Had Been Four Years on the Island -- Formerly Missionary in Mexico -- Cablegram Brought Sad News.

Our community was shocked and saddened yesterday to learn that Miss Jean L. Ankrom, of Waynesburg, who has for nearly four years past held a position in the Department of Public Instruction on the island of Porto Rico, had been in an accident.

A cablegram was received by Cashier J. B. F. Rinehart, of the Farmers & Drovers bank, just before noon, as follows:

San Juan, Porto Rico, June 17.
J. B. F. Rinehart,
Waynesburg, Pa.

Jean L. Ankrom killed almost instantly in carriage accident, yesterday afternoon. Will cost $300 to prepare body for States. Must decide immediately. Authorities permit keeping body only short time. Cable reply immediately. More details by mail.

Supt. Lindsay,
Dept. Public Instruction.

The sad news was at once sent by telephone to the family, who reside four miles east of town, and as soon as a reply could be received Cashier Rinehart called up the Chase National Bank of New York by long distance phone and directed them to cable the required amount of money to Supt. Lindsay and Mr. Rinehart also sent a cable message to the latter, instructing him to send Miss Ankrom's remains to Waynesburg. Capt. J. P. Teagarden who was consulted by the friends expressed the opinion that the body would arrive in about a week.

Miss Ankrom, the young teacher whose life has gone out while engaged in noble work, was a daughter of A. I. Ankrom, Esq., a prominent citizen of Franklin township, Greene county. She was in her thirty-second year and graduated from Waynesburg College in 1894. She at once began to prepare herself for missionary work and in the following year went as a missionary to Mexico. She returned in 1897 because of poor health, but in 1899, after our government had performed the God-aided service of freeing our neighboring islands upon the south from Spanish oppression, and was calling for teachers to instruct their people, Miss Ankrom was among the first to respond. She received her appointment July 1, 1899, under the War Department, as a teacher in Puerto Rico, and was assigned to a position Oct. 1, 1899. From time to time high praise of her work came back and a year ago she was promoted to be Superintendent of the Public Schools for the District of Ponce. Under her charge were 67 different schools and the position corresponded to that of county superintendent here. She was most successful and had the esteem and appreciation of the people, the teachers and officials. Her last visit home was two years since. Last autumn she secured a position in the schools at San Juan for Miss Kate Thompson, a teacher in the Waynesburg High School. Miss Ankrom was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church and was an esteemed christian young lady and her death is a public loss. Her mother died five years ago. Beside her father she leaves three sisters, Miss Anna Ankrom, Miss Lottie Ankrom and Mrs. H. L. Sproat. These and other relatives have the deepest sympathy of our people.

Miss Ankrom is spoken of by her friends, here, as having been a fearless young woman and it was known by her letters written home that she was the owner of a high spirited horse which sometimes attempted to run away. Her duties required her to drive over her district and it is believed that the fatal accident may have been caused by the animal she owned."
