"Mrs. Mary Charity Martin, 88, widow of General Edward Martin, died at 2:15 p. m. Sunday, November 12, 1967, after a long illness. She had lived for many years on LeMoyne Avenue, but in recent months resided at George Washington Hotel. She was born July 31, 1879, at Monongahela, a daughter of James A. and Melissa Dickey Scott. Mrs. Martin was educated in the public schools of Waynesburg, and graduated from Waynesburg College with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1901. She received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Beaver College in 1948 and the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Waynesburg College in 1951. She was married December 1, 1908, to Edward Martin. He became Commanding General of the 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guard; was Governor of Pennsylvania from 1943-1947 and served as U. S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1947-1959. She devoted much time to church and welfare work. Mrs. Martin served as honorary chairman for the War Bond Drive for Pennsylvania during World War II and received a medal and citation from the United States Treasurer. Her greatest achievements were with the soldiers, working among them, visiting hospitals and comforting the families left behind. During World War II, Mrs. Martin lived in Harrisburg and was Pennsylvania's First Lady. She also spent 12 years in Washington, D. C., while her husband was U.S. Senator. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington; Washington County Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Philadelphia Society; Senate Ladies' Red Cross, Washington, D. C.; Women of the Army and Navy Legion of Valor; Delta Kappa Gamma Society; Beta Sigma Pi International Sorority; Christopher Gist Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists; and Daughters of the Seventeenth Century. Her husband died March 19, 1967. Surviving are one son, Edward S. Martin; and one daughter, Mary Charity, wife of James B. W. Murphy, both of Washington; and two nieces. Three brothers: Charles, Allen and Frank Scott, are deceased." |
