"Illness Fatal To Mrs. Reed Mrs. Jane Ross Reed, 64, prominent Waynesburg resident and member of a well known Greene County family, died at 9:55 p. m. Friday, April 25, 1952, at her home, [first number cut-off]32 E. High street, after an illness which lasted for six years. She was the wife of William K. Reed, Waynesburg contractor, who survives. Mrs. Reed first became ill when she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage six years ago. Although at times she had shown sufficient improvement to be able to be taken for short car rides around town, her condition grew gradually worse during the past year. She had been critical for the past several weeks, growing rapidly worse during the past few days. Mrs. Reed was born August 8, 1887 in Waynesburg, a daughter of Jesse L. Ross and Mary Donahoo Ross, both deceased. Her parents were both widely known throughout the county during the early part of the century. Her father was the owner and operator of the drug store in Waynesburg which still bears his name and at the time of his death some years ago was one of the best known private individuals in southwestern Pennsylvania. Mrs. Reed's early education was obtained in the public schools of Waynesburg, after which she was graduated from Waynesburg College in the class of 1909. Following her graduation she made what was then known as the grand tour of Europe, an eight month tour which included visits to principal points of historic and cultural interest on the continent and in England. After her return home she taught in the Waynesburg elementary schools for three years prior to her marriage to W. K. Reed on July 8, 1912. For many years up until her last illness Mrs. Reed was active in many community affairs and charitable organizations. She had also engaged in many private charitable benefactions in much the same manner as her parents had done during their lifetime. Mrs. Reed was a lifelong member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Waynesburg. In addition to her husband, W. K. Reed, she is survived by three sons, Samuel R., and Charles L. Reed, both of Waynesburg; John William Reed, of Ardmore, Okla., two daughters, Mary Jane, wife of Raymond C. Adamson of near Washington, and Jesse L., wife of William E. Meighen of Waynesburg, R. D. 3, one sister, Mrs. Helen Ross Furman, of Waynesburg, and eight grandchildren. A brother, John H. Ross, is deceased." |
