"Mrs. Mary Denny Weaver, 81, of 145 West High Street, Waynesburg, who was prominently identified with Waynesburg College for many years and who served as vice president of its board of trustees, died at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, November 22, 1972, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. She had been seriously ill for the past several weeks and failed to recover following surgery. Born in Waynesburg July 15, 1891, Mrs. Weaver was the daughter of Eleazer Luse Denny and Louise Inghram Denny. Both her paternal and maternal families established residence in the Waynesburg area prior to 1790. In 1929 she married Charles Arthur Weaver, of Chicago, Ill., and resided in Chicago until his death November 25, 1949. During her residence there, she was a member of the Women's Athletic Club and the College Club. She worked unceasingly for the betterment of the college, and in recognition of her loyalty and service to the college and community, Denny Hall, a women's dormitory, was named in her honor. She was a granddaughter of a founding trustee, John I. Hook, and the granddaughter of a trustee, Meeker Woodruff Denny. Mrs. Weaver was graduated from Danna Hall and Briarcliff Manor Junior College. She received both her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees from Waynesburg College in 1914, and in 1954 was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at Waynesburg. A well known pianist - composer, Mrs. Weaver studied composition with the late Dr. Harvey Gaul, of Pittsburgh, and in France at the Fountainblesil School of Music as a pupil of Nania Beauranger. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian church of Waynesburg, a Charter member of the Christopher Gist Chapter, Daughters of American Colonists, and a member of the John Corbly Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Weaver is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Helen Denny Howard and Miss Josephine Denny, both of Waynesburg. Services were held Saturday with burial in Green Mount Cemetery." |
