SOURCE: Journal of Leroy W. Cleavenger (Manuscript, 1857; Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania); owned in 2003 by Bonnie (Watts) Cook – great-granddaughter of Margaret Leonice (Needham) Still, Leroy’s love interest spoken of frequently in his journal entries. A transcription was made from the original diary in 2003 by John F. Hartman and Betty V. Hartman of Parkville, Maryland.

Introduction

Original owned in 2003 by the descendants of Margaret Leonice (Needham) Still, an 1857 graduate of Waynesburg College and the "Maggie" so fondly spoken of throughout the diary's pages. A tribute written by Maggie concludes the diary and can be viewed in the epilogue.

These pages were transcribed from the original diary in 2003 by John F. and Betty V. Hartman of Parkville, Maryland.

A Note from the Transcribers

Transcription of the following writings of Leroy Cleavenger has been very difficult. Torn pages, faded print, inconsistent spelling and penmanship all contribute to the difficulty of interpretation and transcription of the text.

Where words are unreadable or not clear, [sic] or [?] denote the previous word or words have been copied as written, or interpreted by us, the transcribers, or are questionable.

The original wording and context of the diary has been retained as much as possible. Only the formatting, such as adding paragraphs where appropriate for clarity - and obvious punctuation errors have been changed or modified.

In the passage on page 3, Saturday, April 10th: “Blackstone has been sadly neglected today, ….” and others, his references are directed to Sir William Blackstone, who appears to be the subject of one or more of Leroy’s classes. The following is from the Internet web site at: www.aoc.gov/cc/art/lawgivers/blackstone.htm

“Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780). English jurist; professor of common law at Oxford; author of Commentaries on the Laws of England, which had considerable influence on the importation and adaptation of English common law in America.”
